Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's five stages - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance - originally referred to stages the dying person went through. But quickly appropriated by grieving, who seemed to have been waiting for someone to tell them how to 'do' grief.

People need to figure out a way to sever themselves from the dead.

Lot more people (seem to) believe in a concept of 'heaven' than report a belief in any formal religion. Lot more New Age than traditional - people really like the idea that departed has become an angel, or a bird, or a butterfly.

Social media wrought significant change. People still post to departed's wall, and feel that they can somehow read what is posted.

Problem that parents often not listed as Facebook Friends, so cannot access account.

Norway, Sweden, Germany, people's graves expire after 20 or 25 years, unless pay to extend. Body dug up and cremated, and plot re-used by more recent dead.
