Started in movie business working for Paramount Studios in London, writing the title cards for silent movies. Then worked his way up to writing scripts and then directing them.
First big success was The Lodger, based on Jack the Ripper story. He even appeared as an extra in film, something he carried through to all his films.
After a succession of hit movies Hithcock family moved to LA in 1938. His first American movie, Rebecca won Oscar for best film.
