Umberto Eco said "the cultivated person's first duty is to be always prepared to rewrite the encyclopedia". He didn't mean it literally; for him 'the encyclopedia' meant the accumulated wisdom and beliefs of society. He thought these ideas should be constantly rewritten as societies became more sophisticated.
But Wikipedia has transformed the metaphor to the literal.
