Gordon Childe 1925 was first to realize the remorseless logic of social revolutions of prehistory. He was first to see a process - an inevitable and predictable set of social consequences. 
  
Civ started on the large alluvial plains which needed extensive co-operative work to drain/irrigate land, and to build defences.
  
Surplus of grain grown on fertile plains had to not only pay for imported resources, but support merchants and transporters.
