The Central Liberal Truth
Lawrence Harrison
Described "progress-prone cultures" and "progress-resistant cultures".
Progress-prone cultures assume they can change their own destiny, that wealth is the product of human creativity and hence expandable. They live to work, they are more optimistic, they value tidiness and punctuality, they place huge value on education, they see their family as a gateway to wider society, they internalize guilt and hold themselves responsible for what happens.
Progress-resistant societies are fatalistic, they think that wealth is fixed and is a zero-sum game. They work to live, they see their family as a fortress in a hostile world, they externalize guilt and blame others when things go wrong.
