The God Gene
How Faith Is Hardwired Into Our Genes
Dean Hamer
Francis Galton, a Nineteenth Century English scientist who was a cousin of Charles Darwin, was the first to see the value of twin studies. Even though lived well before anyone figured out genetics, he guessed that the reason identical twins were so similar in personality as well as appearance, was that they had inherited the same makeup, whereas non-identical twins were just like brothers and sisters.
He was also the first to try to objectively measure the efficacy of prayer. He compared lives of well-known clergy to other eminent men, and was surprised and shaken to find that clergy died earlier and had just as many illnesses and diseases.
Twin studies demonstrate clearly that religiousness (ie pretty much how often you go to church) is determined by culture and yr immediate environment, whereas spirituality (as measured by self-transcendence) is innate; genetically determined.
