Time To Eat The Dog?

Robert and Brenda Vale

Sir Edmund Hillary spent lot of time trying to help Nepalese villagers. He got them to take iodine pills to prevent goitre. Since the villagers had composting toilets, the iodine only had to be provided once. The villagers excreted the iodine in the composting toilets, which then turned it into fertilizer to be added to crops, which then took up the iodine for the villagers to consume again.

Tried to calculate costs of keeping a cat. Whereas in the past an animal had to earn its keep, either as food, or by catching vermin etc. Now that we have gotten squeamish about eating our pets, we need to consider their footprint. Some of the things took into account include food they eat, the containers, disposal of cat litter and destruction of birdlife. They even took into acct the extra heating required to compensate for the inevitable draught around a catdoor.

NZ has 4m people and abt 1m cats. These cats were fed 38,000 tons of cat food, of which half came in tins. The meat takes land to produce; the tins have to be manufactured, and disposed of. Calculated that to feed cats kept in top 10 cat countries of world requires land at least size of NZ to produce.
