Cities are the most efficient way of organising people. Cities reduce costs, and increase the speed of transmission of good ideas, generating wealth, and finding a partner.
Post war Auckland adopted a California lifestyle - lots of roads for cars, and low density suburbs. But while it looked like a big sprawling US city, it retained English county-style govt.
In 1960's NZers watched 2 TV shows - one was Bonanza, where handsome cowboys roamed wide plains and won battles. The other was Coronation Street, a grimy street of small houses and small minds. One show was all optimism and looking forward, the other was all backward looking - WW2 was a constant presence.
